5 Gallon Midwest PET Plastic Carboy

$23.99

Product Number: 6060

The new 5 Gallon Midwest PET Plastic Carboy is ideal for secondary fermentation and long term aging beer and wine. When full, it weighs an easily managed 42 pounds and is light as a feather when empty for easy cleaning.

Designed to be strong, scuff resistant, easy to handle, and essentially unbreakable all while providing a taste- and odor-free, BPA-free, DEHP-free, plasticizer-free fermentor. Midwest PET Plastic Carboys are non-absorbing, non-porous, and non-wetting (hydrophobic), so it will not carry over flavors from one batch of wine or beer to the next and it is easier to clean and sanitize than glass or other plastics. Midwest PET Plastic Carboys are the best choice for home winemaking and homebrewing.

Midwest PET Plastic Carboys use a #10 stopper or a Medium Universal Carboy Bung with an airlock.

Product Rating:

I hear a lot of talk about how these carboys aren't as good as glass because they are oxygen permeable but I have had no issues so far. Although I have only stored beer for up to a month thus far there have been no issues.

Product Rating:

I like this PET carboy, but still prefer glass. Glass is predictable, it holds the same shape no matter what, you have to handle it very carefully. PET is a different animal though, you don't have to worry about shattering it, but you do have to be careful handling your brew in PET as it is very flexible. If you pick up a PET carboy by the neck you have to worry about your airlock fluid being pulled into the carboy by the vaccuum. If you pick it up by bear hugging it you will pressurize the carboy and risk pulling airlock fluid when you set it down and it depressurizes. Overall I still prefer a glass carboy, but you don't have to worry about shattering PET.

Sceptical at first but impressed Review by Randall

Product Rating:

Ordered this because I was concerned of the weight and danger of a heavy glass carboy in my house. I was skeptical of plastic but this thing is super easy to move and even easier to clean. You don't use a brush to clean it but i found a video on youtube of how to clean with about a gallon of water and one step and a wash cloth and was almost too easy to clean. I cannot taste any difference in beer that has been racked into a glass carboy, I can't give any input into a long term racking of wine perhaps. Will probably order a 6 gallon for wine making also.

It works like it should Review by Rob

It works really well, my only advice would be move it once and leave it. As someone said before if you just pick it up, the bottom will sag and can suck in fluid from the airlock. But other then that it does the job well

Over all good product Review by Dean

Easy to use easy to clean. I prefer to use glass for long term secondary but I like that its less weight with the plastic.

I actually ordered this by accident when I meant to order a better bottle. I'm glad I did, though, because it is every bit as good as the better bottle for fermenting at a lower cost.

Good but could be better Review by Trenton

Product Rating:

Personally owning 12 glass carboys of different sizes i like to think i have a pretty good take on carboys. The only practical advantage a glass carboy has over these is scratch resistance and vessel rigidity. These are naturally hydrophobic and due to this it is pretty close to non stick and cleans well. I just wish they were thicker for rigidity for moving when full as they will suck fluid from your airlock. This can be avoided by keeping and moving them in milk crates. The units are about 10-12 pounds lighter than a 5 gallon glass carboy. These also are very safe in comparison to glass carboys. While i do like glass carboys (they just look nice!) the quality of them varies so much and because of this it is hard to get a good one now days. I Highly recommend these bottles given the current market options!

So much easier to deal with vs glass. I get why people prefer glass but these things are a joy to move around and rack with. Save your back, try 1 plastic carboy, why not?
