Not a Great Airlock Review by Soiuby Brewing

(Posted on 4/6/10)

Product Rating:

The problem with this Airlock is that if you are producing gas at a normal pace it blows out all of your water used for air-locking. If the spheres were only a little larger it would work much better.

Works great! Review by Hoose

Product Rating:

I was buying another carboy so I decided to try this airlock since I already had the other two kinds. It was a little expensive especially compared to the cheaper airlocks but I am very happy with its performance. If you fill the airlock with liquid to half the height of the spheres, the bubbling is quiet and fun to watch. The glass slid into the bung a lot easier than the plastic ones too.

Fragile Review by DiJulio

Product Rating:

Very, Very Fragile. Old world style and sound. A must with a classic 15 gallon Demi John. MUST be kept away from children, animals or the unfamiliar.

Love it Review by JEFFREY

Product Rating:

I use the standard plastic 3 peice airlock for my initial fermentation as large amounts of gas are produced. But once i transfer to my carboy i use this item. It allows you to see even the smallest amount of fermentation left knowing that you still have some to go. A great extra item to have.

just not a fan Review by cam

Product Rating:

I have one of these, down from three after breaking two, and I just don't like them. Even before snapping them in half they weren't my favorite. Not enough space in the bulb so the water gets completely blown out with a vigorous fermentation. Yes they look cool and are easy to make sure they are clean after a PBW soak but I just know that if I put that other on in I'm going to break it. Chalk the low rating up to user error if you want, but I'm not buying these when there are other good options.

Us ein conjunction with a plastic air lock Review by Ed

(Posted on 1/12/13)

Product Rating:

For your primary fermentation use the standard 3 piece or S plastic air locks. This is very good on your secondary fermentor. The spheres are kind of small, but thats not a problem when very little gas is let off. It is delicate so handle it carefully.
It's good for detecting very low levels of off gassing so you know fermentation is still going on.

Can be very dangerous if you're not careful Review by Mike

Product Rating:

A word to the wise - this is a gorgeous airlock but is EXTREMELY fragile. 17 stitches on my hand can speak to the effects of having it shatter, so please be careful when handling or removing from fermenters.

I like it Review by Trenton

Product Rating:

I really like the look and chemical resistance of glass. Like any airlock this works best with non foaming sanitizer to prevent foaming and climbing out of the unit. Please keep in mind this is NON tempered glass. It will not explode into a million tiny pieces but into extremely sharp chunks. It is glass and need to be treat as glass. I wear a glove whenever placing or pulling from a bung plug. The shape makes it tempting to use the curves as leverage when placing and removing... dont to it! If you can manage to not wrench on it is a worthwhile unit! I just wish it was tempered!

looks super cool Review by Ryan

Product Rating:

While this looks awesome it has a number of drawbacks. You will need to add water a few times a day as it blows out the top with ever bubble. Longer bends or some type of cap would fix this. You have to be very careful handling it. Please be very careful when inserting or taking out of a plug. This is very thin and not tempered glass.

It's a bit more expensive compared to the plastic air locks but I'm satisfied with its performance. If you fill the airlock with liquid to half the height of the spheres, the bubbling is cool to watch. The glass is easier to insert into the bung than the plastic air locks.
