This kit contains some handy items for brewers and winemakers just getting into the hobby. If the brewer/winemaker in your life started out with a Midwest Supplies Equipment Kit, they should already have a hydrometer, which measures potential alcohol in wine or beer. Our Basic Measuring & Testing Kit includes:

12" Plastic Hydrometer Test Jar; The longer size of this test jar works well for those who make higher alcohol beers or for wine makers.The screw-off base allows for easy cleaning.

Dial Thermometer; This dial thermometer has a large face and a 12" probe that gives quick and accurate readings.

Stainless Steel Baster; Used for drawing samples for hydrometer readings. Stainless Steel is preferred because it doesn't absorb flavors, is easy to clean, and usually doesn't hide bacteria in scratches.

This set is good for the beginner brewer who doesn't want to go all out with the initial purchases. The baster will last forever. It does drip, but it's minor and if you put a towel under the cylinder, cleanup is easy. The graduated cylinder is a good heavy plastic and holds liquid without leaking the best I could tell. I did have some beer at the base, but I think that was a result of the baster dripping. The thermometer works, but just feels a little cheaply made. I can hear the spring bouncing around on the inside when I pick it up and set it down, so it just feels like it's going to lose its accuracy. But for now it works, so no complaints so far.

What a great value right here. If you add up the stuff individually you're saving $$ which with this hobby is always good. The stainless steal baster And dial thermometer are great quality and work great. The plastic Hydrometer test jar doesn't look like the same quality of the other two. It does com apart which made cleaning easier but we shall see if it holds up to the test of time. Either way you look at it it's a great value because if you add up the first two things it's the same price as the whole set so you are basically getting the hydrometer test jar for free.
