This is the only Barleywine extract kit I have made and it turned out wonderful. It is a big beer so I recommend a blow off tube for sure. I really like the malt/hops balance going on here. Typically, I like to bulk age in a secondary for 2-3 months before bottling/kegging and then try to keep my hands off it for another couple of months. "People" say you should age a barleywine for a year...to date, I have not been able to get past 9 months before consuming. I highly recommend this kit.

This is the best of the kits I have made so far from Midwest. It really didn't become drinkable until aging for several months in the bottles. I just finished my last bottle after bottle conditioning in a dark, cool spot for about 18 months. Very smooth, a bit sweet with several layers of hops coming through. Not a great summer drinking beer, but a great special treat on cold nights.

Just opened a bottle of December 2007.
I think I have a few bottles left, no you can't come over.
Make this, and hide it. It's good stuff.

This beer was absolutely great. I aged it for 4 months in a constant temperature environment, force carbonated it, and then served it cold. It was the biggest hit at the family Thanksgiving and at New Years. Will definitely make again this year.

Plan on letting this one sit for a WHILE. I brewed it in November 2010 and its starting to be ok now. at first, very harsh and alcoholic burn. then it mellows out. its not as hoppy as I like a barleywine to be, but like all of them, you just need to give it at least 9 months from the time you brew it. If you can wait, its a good barleywine to start with if you havent made any. A good jumping off point. I like kits for that reason. I usually do a recipe unless I really like the kit. I havent found one yet. All in all, try it if you like barleywines and dont have much experience with them.

This barley wine is amazing. I brewed last September. In late January, the product was already decent enough to be the star of a ski house party. Now it's even more amazing. It has also gotten one friend back into homebrewing ("You made that from a kit?? Hot damn, kits have improved!") and another friend into homebrewing ("I want to do that!").

I made this two years ago and just drank the last bottle. I left it in the primary for four weeks, then in the secondary for seven months. I let it age in the bottle for one month before trying it. It became my favorite on the spot. After more than a year in the bottle it has an almost brandy-like taste.I can't afford to make this my everyday beer but I do make it once a year as a birthday present to myself.
