If you are looking for a book that gives you a starting point for brewing Belgian style beers, you may be disappointed.
If you enjoy the Belgian styles and are interested in learning more about them, and their history, this book has is for you.
It's an educational book and not strictly a Belgian recipe book.

Many Home brewers try to create Belgian beers with the goal of high alcohol content. That's not going to make you a good Belgian beer. Belgian beers are about allowing the yeast to attenuate properly and contribute flavor, and about balance and drinkability. Higher alcohol content is nice, but almost incidental.

It's a good book, and very interesting , but you wont be able to "brew like a monk" after reading it. The book is more about the history of the beers brewed in Belgium and northern France. I wish there were more recipes. If you are looking for a book that gives you a starting point for brewing beers of this style, you may be disappointed.

A lot of coverage of the history of the style. But it also has a lot of information and is not for the novice. Detailed coverage of ingredients, enzymes, attenuation, fermentor design mash PH, hop extracts, pitching rates, Krausening, bottle conditioning, and fermentation temperatures.
