This isn't a book on how to brew beer, those are commonplace.
The book discusses in depth how the malts absorb and impart the smoke flavors. How the different types of smoke impact the malt and the beer. There is a detailed history of smoke in beers and I learned that many beers at one time tasted of smoke because of methods use to dry the malt.
