Am I missing something?

I received the false bottom along with the stainless steel adapter. First of all the 3/8's tube does not work with the compression fitting on the adapter. There is nothing securing the 3/8's tube to the false bottom and the adapter. I have a standard sanke and I have to cut the 3/8's tube to make it work because it is too long. I would not dare use this without some serious modifications. It would be easy to knock this loose while stirring your mash. You might as well buy the 11" false bottom.

This false bottom works great as is. I did not have to make any modifications and the adapter works just fine with it. I have not had a single grain get past it yet! The only think I would have done different is get the screen from here and a half inch dip tube and fitting from somewhere else as I am using half inch hose.

I had the same issue as Dok, so he's not missing something. The tube provided with this kit is too long for a standard sanke keg.
Even if it were the right length, it does not sit well in the adapter, which I also purchased from MW. It comes loose very easy, and came loose on me while stirring the mash, exactly as Dok suggested. I didn't even hit it with the paddle, but the grains movement was enough to jar it loose. Talking with the support staff, it sounds like they haven't figured this out either, so I suggest you look for a different solution.

I would recommend it

I have been using this false bottom for over 8 years. I have not had it get loose from the adapter and did not have to modify the tube. I have it attached to a weldless ball valve in a standard American Sanke keg. You do have to make it very tight to keep it from getting loose. I pump directly from the mashtun for a HERMS recirculation and during a fly sparge and have not had a stuck mash with well over 100 batches brewed. I recommend it as a solid false bottom.

Bought this instore and was instructed at checkout for best results to widen the center hole and get a 1/2 inch diptube and compression fitting. I didn't head the advice and used as is... worked good enough but extremely slow draining tun for batch sparge. Cut the center hole bigger and made a 1/2inch diptube with compression fitting from menards. In my opinion works a lot better with better flow. Doesn't make since if you have all 1/2 inch valves and fittings leaving your mashtun with the standard 3/8 inch diptube inside.

This is OK at best...

Yep...this puppy broke free from the compression fitting during careful stirring...grain-filled pump and lines etc. It was the weak link in the maiden voyage of the new single-tier system which my friends now call the Titanic. Grumble. Grumble. If I had a do-over, I'd get a hinged one that is kept in place by the kettle walls, not hanging on by a 3/8 in. stem. Also, there is a ring around the perimeter where grain will be in contact with your kettle bottom. You'll scorch those if you don't stir. Apparently, I stirred so gingerly that I scorched AND managed to detach the thing. Not. Exactly. Happy.
PS...I've been all-grain brewing for 19 years...

Works well in my recerculating mashtun but I did have to drill out the 3/8" hole to accomadate my 1/2" dip tube.

It fit's fine and works 100% for me. I didn't have to make any modifications. Its never gotten loose, and grain doesn't get around the edges, I'm completely satisfied.
