Not as much a how to make porter, as a book about the history of porter, which is fine as long as you know that up front.
It wont help you brew a modern day porter, but its a good read

I liked the coverage of the evolution of Porter. Just because a style is made differently today, doesn't mean we shouldn't try the older versions. I enjoyed looking through all the older recipes. A neat book.

It has recipes for brewing what porter must have tasted like from a century and a half ago, but it's focus is on understanding the style. The book explains how Porter evolved, and what malts to use and what to strive for and what to avoid.

The book is mostly about the history of Porter rather than how to brew Porter. It's of less interest to a home brewer and of more interest to a beer Connoisseur. Maybe for advanced brewers it's useful, but for intermediate brewers like me, it's not that helpful.
