Excelsior is Excellent! Review by Hokietiki

Product Rating:

I brewed this with Safale-05. Typical primary, secondary and kegging conditions and it turned out to be excellent. Deep amber color and good hop / bitterness. If you have never had an Altbier, this is the kit to get.

The real thing!!! Review by Frankish Empire

I have enjoyed Alt Bier from three regions of Germany over a 7 year period, and always loved Alt Bier. This is the real deal!!!! I brew and secondary at low temp.. Two batches at a time now, of this fine brew. I have cut back 1/2 oz of the Crystal hops adding with the finishing hops and split the malt in half adding the last 3 Lbs with 15 min left in boil of wart. Good brew for a kicker of light Pils Malt. Maybe 2lbs DME Pils works good for me in last 15 mins. This is now my house bier and it goes quick. Take your time with this bier and it will treat you well. Yeast works great, don't be afraid to warm bier up a few days before racking. Drink cold and poor slow, the yeast likes to flow but tastes great.

This was the first beer I ever brewed and it turned out great. It's surprisingly refreshing for an amber. All my buddies (a.k.a. beer snobs) loved it and are looking forward to another batch.

This was my first homebrew and it turned out great! Followed the directions except for an extra week in the secondary. Well balanced between the maltiness and the hoppiness. The color is more brown than amber. Has hints of cocoa. Very satisfying. I will definitely put this in my rotation of brews.

I made this altbier for an outdoor tailgate party in MN in December. This is an excellent cold-weather brew! My batch was very dark amber in color, and according to hydrometer it was in the 7-8% alc range. Of the dozen beers I brewed last year, this was a clear favorite. keep it cool (~55-58) for secondary fermentation. Out of 5 stars this is a 7!

Awesome beer, a must try! Review by mountainbrew

My favorite kit so far. I think this will have to be the house beer, brewed and drank frequently. I used the wyeast german ale, primary at 70 degrees for ten days, secondary at 58 degrees for ten days, warmed up for a day then bottled and conditioned at 70 degrees for a week, then moved to 60 degrees for two weeks (not sure why). This beer came to life after six weeks in the bottle, and got better after every bottle.
