This is a must have piece of equipment. Testing with the hydrometer is so much easier. The right equipment always makes it easy.

A Great Thief!

This thief stole my wife's heart. Fast and easy to use. I saw a video of someone using this and they were bobbing this up and down in a carboy. Read the directions. This will fill fast and easy without bobbing and disturbing/aerating your wine. I don't use this for my hydrometer though I certainly see how it could be. I just don't like leaving the hydrometer in the thief and tempting fate to tip it out later. Or taking such a large sample unless I plan to sample the sample. Your mileage may vary.

Absolute must for anyone making wine or beer

This is a great product and definitely makes life easier when trying to check your wine/beer once it is in a carboy. They should really include this in the starter kits, but oh well live and learn.

This works great for being able to take a sample. I premeasured and marked on the thief the minimum amount I need to be able to take a measurement. This way I can minimize waste since I never return the sample. This video shows a great way to use it to get a sample without using a siphon:

All in all, a great item.

Not crazy about it....

I'm not crazy about this item. Its made from cheap plastic which scratches very easily. The bottom doesn't seal well and drips everywhere. Its narrow, which it needs to be to fit into a carboy, but the hydrometer tends to rest against the side making it hard to get an accurate reading. I'm going to try a standard wine thief and a graduated cylinder. Maybe I'm just using it wrong....

This makes getting samples from the carboy for readings SO EASY. Not sure how people do without one. It's a must have IMO.

The thief works OK. It drips due to a questionable seal on the bottom, especially when working with musts that contain ANY solids. Being plastic has pros and cons - it does not easily break however it will only last a year or two as it gets small cracks in the plastic when it ages. The cracks, although too small to leak, makes getting it really clean questionable. I only use it for acquiring samples as the small diameter makes it difficult to make accurate hydrometer measurements.
