My new favorite brew

Amazing! That sums it up.
This recipe produces an outstanding ale, quite similar to Surly's Furious but perhaps slightly more balanced. Furious is my favorite commercial beer and I always buy it when I can get it. Ferocious isn't quite as hoppy as Furious. The grapefruit notes are somewhat more subdued in Ferocious, compared to the buckshot-to-the-face hoppiness of Furious -- and the malt character is a little more pronounced. In some respects this makes Ferocious a more drinkable beer, but Furious occupies a category of its own -- dang near a greyhound in a beer glass. Both of them are fantastic. I hope and pray that Midwest makes Ferocious a standard kit rather than a special edition! I'll be forced to re-create it piecemeal if they don't.

This was my second beer and it came out amazing. If you like Surly Furious and hoppy ales, you'll absolutely love this beer. Strongly recommend a blow of tube for this beer!

My first IPA, and it was delicious, came out very similar to the original.
15 days primary, 7 days secondary dryhop with no bag. In keg for an additional week before chilling and carbonating. Not done carbonating yet and the flavor and aroma are wonderful. This one will not last long for sure!

This beer is hands down our best brewed kit. If it weren't for the sake of variety, my boyfriend would probably prefer brewing this one time and time again! The nose on it makes me swoon, and having done a glass-by-glass comparison to the original, it is a very close clone. If anything, we preferred ours a bit for its balance.

I was in Rochester visiting family and finally able to buy my first 4-pack of Surly Furious. My brother managed to give me a "holiday 2-pack" (reference heineken commercial for the holiday 5-pack). I brought a few of my own with me from Brooklyn so that we could do a side-by-side comparison. The kit is almost identical in aroma and on the front end of the tasting (I used the wyeast propagator). The Surly finishes late with a good dose of bitter which was missing from the kit... However, I actually prefer the kit as it's easier to drink and very refreshing. This will become the standard that I hold all my IPAs to from now on as it has easily become my favorite beer. If I could afford it (lots of malt extract and lots of hops = money) I would brew this at all times. I highly recommend this kit.

I've never had the real Furious, but this IPA is as good as any craft brew IPA you can buy. My favorite Midwest kit. Well balanced IPA with a big, beautiful aroma.

I'm on my third batch of Ferocious. I've kegged some and bottled some and I have to say both containers have worked and tasted great.

First Dry Hop

This was the first dry hop I've ever done. Fantastic product. I never had a chance to taste its real life counterpart but having had the other Surly beers I'm sure its excellent, gotta find a friend in MN to send me a can so I can compare.
I've had it kegged now for 2 weeks. Not sure if I'm going to be able to let it mature as at least half of it is now gone. Oh well, guess I'll have to brew another.

I made this beer three times . It is a great tasting beer for kit. (Great Value For The
Amount Of Hops). The next time I make this beer I will add honey to try to get a Bell's Hop Slam taste.

This is my second attempt at using a Midwest extract kit and I am very satisfied with the results. This beer tastes great even after only 3 weeks. I placed the beer in the primary fermenter for 1 week and the secondary fermenter for another week and then bottled. I tried a bottle after 1 week and the flavors had balanced out well, not too sweet and not hoppy. I can't wait to taste this beer in a month. Even though I like this kit a lot and expect to brew it again, I think that there is a lot of potential to take this kit and use it as a base recipe for your own killer IPA recipe.
