Great starter labels, but... Review by Jimmy the Geek

(Posted on 8/9/11)

Product Rating:

I've used the green ones before, and they are a great way to label your beer or wine, especially if you have multiple styles. They go on easily and come off easily, and the print quality is very good, about what you'd expect with plain paper in an inkjet printer.

Now comes the 'but...' If you are not using a laser printer or pigment dye inks, you HAVE to use a shellac to keep your design from running all over your label, hands, coasters, tables...you get the picture. Shellacs for this application are available at hobby/craft stores like Hobby Lobby.

All in all, a very good idea executed pretty well!

I agree with Jimmy the Geek. The solution is to slap some clear packing tape over the top. The packing tape peels easily and prevents it from running if you use ink jet (which is all I have).

Works Great Review by Shawn

Product Rating:

Works great with a color laser printer. Went to local print shop and had them printed for 39 cents a page.

Quick, easy, not for professional look Review by pulver

Product Rating:

It gets the job done, but the paper is not able to take a vibrant color print. The adhesive is very quick and effective. Rolled through the printer without any issues. Overall a good product just to get one's own labels on the products.

Hint for Using Review by Jody R

I haven’t given the label material a complete test yet, but it seems to work just fine.
HINT: From my own experience and from working with a commercial artist some of the problems people say they have could be solved by a coat of Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic spray (#1303). It will make the label virtually waterproof. It will keep the ink or laser from running, boost the contrast of the artwork, give it a nice gloss finish and make you look professional. You can even give it another coat after it is on the bottle and dry, to seal it to the bottle. If you read the instructions for using the label stock, they suggest using Krylon finish like I am here. Try it, you will be impressed.

I bought these labels so I could tell all of my different brews apart. They work as advertised and run through the printer with no problems.

I had no problems using these with my inkjet, but I keep the designs minimal. A image and the style of beer, nice for when I bring to parties or to watch a football game.

Not so good Review by Brandon

Product Rating:

It's not water proof so the design will run if it gets wet, meaning be careful how you cool the bottle. It works better with a laser printer.

Good value Review by Coyote

Product Rating:

This paper worked flawlessly through a laser printer. Some people reported issues with the colors running when wet, but I didn’t have any problems. Granted I didn’t soak the labels in water, but for casual condensation and unintentional wetting it worked fine. I’ve tried the pre-printed labels (didn’t like the design/not customizable) and sticky labels (expensive). This is the best option I’ve found for custom printed labels so far.

Product Rating:

Use a laser printer to prevent the ink from running if the label gets wet. Not a bad deal for starting out. Easy to use.
