Product Details

This American IPA beer kit has a relatively modest gravity and an immodest hop character derived entirely from a single hop variety. Chinook hops have long been used by US brewers for bittering additions, but their intense aroma and flavor have caught on only recently.

This kit is a bit lower in gravity and lighter in body than our other IPA recipe kits, which enhances the perceived bitterness and reduces the aging requirements. It shows up in the glass with a reddish-gold color and a thick, resinous Chinook aroma that lingers after the glass is emptied.

If you enjoyed Hop Cult IPA, you'll love this kit!

Chinook IPA kit

This beer is easy to brew and is very consistent in its final product. Always a favorite at the Prudence Island HomebrewFest here in Rhode Island. October 7th marks our 10th year and this beer will be 1 of my 5 on tap.

Sessionable, easy drinking IPA that's not insanely bitter

I don't like bitter beers, and am very familiar with Chinook hops as they give a grapefruit and piney flavor. I went ahead with this kit because it was not insanely hopped at the start of the boil, and Chinook hops are moderate (about 30) cohumulones, so they give a smooth rather than harsh bitterness. Fermented 2 weeks with Safale US05 (same Chico yeast as Wyeast 1056 and White Labs WLP001 from Sierra Nevada Brewery) at 65F. Left it in my kitchen. Just kegged it tonight, and while the beer is greener than Kermit, it turned out very well. Not bitter at all so far, soft but noticeable grapefruit and pine, medium body, very sessionable. I anticipate it tasting even better after conditioning for a week or two. I wouldn't classify this as an IPA, more like a pale ale. There is some cross over. If I had to guess, I would say this is between 30-35 IBU. Recommended for those who don't like super bitter IPAs.
