Fantastic! Needs lots of conditioning... Review by Matt

Product Rating:

I let this sit in the primary for about two weeks, and then put it in the secondary (along with the coffee) for another two weeks before transferring to the keg. It was decent to begin with, but after conditioning in the keg for almost a month now it's really starting to get good. Too bad it's almost gone!

If you like beer...and you like coffee, this is worth a try. Review by A.D.

This is a great beer. The java is a nice touch. I like coffee so this one is excellent. Very smooth and consistent flavor through the batch. It took about 6 weeks after kegging to "mature" and have the best flavor. My buddy and I each bought this kit and I brewed my coffee through a French press and he did a drip in a coffee maker. It actually produced slightly different results given all other parameters were the same including recipe, rack time, and yeast strain. This is also one of my favorites. I will be ordering this again.

I like the strong coffee flavor and an pleased with how it came out. It would be fun to experiment with different types of coffee. I cold brewed the coffee with a french press to avoid bitterness.

Fun beer to augment Review by Chris C

I've used this kit twice and like to play around with the recipe. For those looking for a milder coffee flavor, try adding the coffee beans (course grind) during the steeping process, then when you rack to the secondary give it a taste, if you feel it needs more, brew a strong pot per the instructions and add to the secondary. This last time I also added vanilla bean and cocoa nibs to the secondary to make it a mocha stout. The cocoa flavor wasn't as prevalent as I'd hoped so will need to play around with that some more, but overall it's a good hearty stout.

Recipe Needs Modification Review by Joe F

When I drank the first bottle I thought the coffee flavor was way too strong. Maybe I screwed up and left the coffee beans in too long but either way I was not a fan. BUT, I added some Kahlua to the beer and it became phenomenal. I might brew this one again but I will add some Kahlua to the secondary fermenter.

The beer turned out great, I like the strong coffee flavor and I'm really happy with the way it conditioned in my keg. Next time around I think I'll do a few small 1 gallon batches with different kinds of coffee. Really happy with this kit, one of my favorites.

Lacking in Body.. Review by J.C.

(Posted on 10/22/13)

Product Rating:

Purchased this kit with high hopes as all the other kits Ive brewed have been fairly impressive. I brewed immediately upon getting the kit. After carbonating in the bottle for 3 wks we decided to give it a shot. The first one we tasted was good, but lacking in body. I thought that maybe it was a one off kind of thing. The next few felt the same. We are just now finishing the last of the batch and I can say without hesitation that there was really not much body at all. The flavors were developed and pretty solid, but the lack of body left me a bit disappointed. Overall this was not a bad choice... (maybe i've just become a bit too picky)

Great Coffee Stout Review by Gabe

This one is killer - have tried several other coffee stouts and this is for sure on the top of the list - Cold brewed the coffee in press pot to avoid getting to much of a bitter coffee flavor - results were smooth and strong - perfect.

What a great combo Review by AP from NJ

Just tapped into my first one after my 2+2+2=6 weeks method. It's a very nice beer. After 6 weeks the coffee after taste is coming off just a bit bitter, but its a very strong flavored stout. When this one was in secondary, my beer room in the basement smelled like coffee the whole time! I think at the 8 week mark it will be perfect. What a nice kit, easy to follow as my 4th attempt at the home brewing experience.

Hey, I;m a coffee nut, so why not make a coffee beer?! Java stout is rich in coffee flavor. Full bodied and not for the beginner at drinking. Goes great with steaks!
