Want to brew lagers year round? Then the Refrigerator Thermostat Control, manufactured by Johnson Controls, is for you. Hook one of these up to that extra refrigerator and you're all set. This unit has a metal probe that you place inside the refrigerator or freezer. The probe reads the inside temperature, and adjusts to within 3.5 degrees of the temperature you set on the analog dial. This unit can be set between 20 and 80° F in one degree increments. Many brewers have found old refrigerators in the paper for 20 bucks, or even free. Good Controller Review by Arizona

(Posted on 2/10/15)

Product Rating:

This is a great solution if you don't need the ability to heat and cool. I have it connected to a chest freezer. I monitored the temperature of my fermenter and the temperature inside the freezer with a thermometer in a bottle of water. After lots of observation and monitoring, here is the bottom line: The temperature of a bottle of water stays almost exactly at the temperature set on the controller. It is very accurate. The fermenter runs a little warmer during the first 2-3 days, due to high activity. It ran about 5 degrees above the temperature inside the freezer. Then it settled down to the same temperature as the freezer. This controller works great if all you need to do is cool. I live in a warm climate, so it works great for me. I highly recommend this. It isn't digital, but it is very accurate and works great.

A good unit, that doesn't stress the compressor and should last.
It was easy to put on my freezer.

Works great, cheaper DIY options exist Review by Dan

(Posted on 1/20/14)

Product Rating:

This thing pretty much works exactly as advertised. You have to be careful not to kink the copper tube, but that's not too hard. The manual control isn't very precise, but it doesn't short cycle the compressor and it's very reliable. If you want the cheapest plug-n-play temp control solution, this is the way to go.

That said, STC-1000's are cheaper to DIY and they have heat switching as well as cooling if you are willing to do a little work.

It goes easy on the compressor. No rapid cycling, its a good unit, wont burn out anytime soon. I've had mine for a couple of years.

Works perfect. Have it setup to control temp in a big chest freezer to control my fermentation temperatures. Couldn't be happier. Definitely worth the money

Lets you set up a fermentation chamber Review by Jerry

Product Rating:

First get an old freezer off Craigs list. Then buy this. You can set yourself up a nice home system for little money. Its accurate to within a few degrees and works great for me. Mines been running fine for over 2 years, and I have no plans on switching. If it conks out I'd go with the digital version.

Works well but... Review by raylaud

I purchased this because my kegerator thermostat went out and this was a better value than buying one for the repair. I does keep the temperature steady in the fridge, however, I left a thermometer in the fridge to be safe. I noticed the temperature on the thermometer was ten degrees higher than the setting on the thermostat. Not a big deal as I was able to adapt for the difference. Just make sure you verify the temperature before trusting the setting.
