This was my first brew. It had a nice flavor but seemed thin and watered down. The ABV was only 3.5%. Will probably be trying a different kit for my next nut brown. Was good to learn on.

we brewed this one a few months ago. we added 1 jar of applesauce to our boil and a gallon of organic apple cider to our fermentor after the chill and it came out very good. it was the traditional nut brown with a hint of apple. it was a hit and was gone after 8 days.

Good over time Review by Hank

I agree, let this set for at least two weeks, the longer the better. At one week, it had almost no carbination, but was still drinkable. After three weeks, it's a beer you'd go buy at the store! Yet another reason you need to keep at least three brews going at any one time!

I have to agree with HbgBrewer (bottom most review)... this brew is very good at one month. It continued to improve for three months. Solution: start another brew and leave half of this to age. It got better and smoother over time and wowed all my beer buddies.

But this kit will not disappoint. Very subtle flavor with no hoppy flavor to it. Very smooth and subtle. Next time I make this I will have to try the addition of cocoa at the end of the boil, I would think that would taste great! Give this one a shot because it is not overbearing like I assumed it could be.

Good and Easy Review by Rusell

I have brewed this kit off and on for about 6 years. I am an all grain brewer and brew this for my non-hop loving friends. It's quick, easy, and goes from my kettle, to fermenter, to keg in about 2-3 weeks. The only addition I add is 8oz DME and 8oz of corn sugar to kick the ABV up a bit:) If you want something that tastes good, easy to make, and hard to mess up...I highly recommend this kit.

You can’t go wrong with this one! Review by John

This was the first batch of beer I brewed. Just followed the instructions, and it came out great. Even my non-homebrew friends like it. Held back a six pack from my last batch just to see what a few months of aging will do for it. Still one of my favorites. Will take the suggestion of “HbgBrewer” and add a little chocolate extract to my next batch.

Easy, tasty brew! Review by HbgBrewer

This is an excellent brew kit for anyone. Like most extract kits, it was quite easy to make (the very reason that I often turn to extract brews). This kit produced a modestly sweet, malty beer that is offset with mild Willamette hops that induce a mild, earthy tone. The color is somewhat darker than commercial nut brown ales that I've tried. However, it truly retains the character of this style of ale. The nut flavor created by the chocolate malt is modest, not overbearing. It has a smooth delicious finish that really satisfies. My suggestions for this kit would include: Use a little less priming sugar per bottle, which is more in line with traditional brown ale's carbonation. Aim for 1.5 to 2.0 volumes CO2. You can find carbonation calculators online to help guide you with measurements. Also, the addition of 2 to 4 tablespoons of "pure" cocoa powder near the end of the boil, or a few drops of chocolate extract into each bottle at bottling adds a mild chocolate essence that compliments the nutty tone wonderfully. I've also tried maple syrup as my substitute priming sugar, which turned out great. I store my bottled nut brown ale in a cool dark place, about 50F to 60F, and serve it at the same temperature. One month of bottle condition at this temperature makes for a great ale, but two to four months of conditioning makes this a real home-run.
