This simple analog controller worked perfectly with the 15 cu. ft. freezer I nabbed on Craigslist. I keep a thermometer inside the freezer to measure the differential, which seems to be about +5F (air vs set point). I also have a cheap "fermometer" on my glass carboys. I usually need to keep the set point 6 degrees less than what I want the brew to be, but once you get that figured out, it's no big deal. If you're planning on getting crazy and want to win lagering championships, then spring for the fancy pants digital model. If you brew for fun and want to get into lagering, this model suits that purpose just fine.

Spend the extra $20 and get the digital one. The digital one has compressor short cycle protection, and has an adjustable differential down to 1F. Using the smallest diff, and taping the probe to the fermenter or large body of liquid, the compressor will cycle less frequently than this analog one, and keep your ferm temps in range. With the analog, you would have to set the controller lower than the desired temp to account for the heat of fermentation- which varies daily.

I have had this exact model for over ten years. It still works great! I totally agree with an earlier reveiwer that a larger temperature swing will make your freezer last longer. I have the same small chest freezer and it still works great too. I moniter the temperature of the fermentation and while the thermostat will allow the air temp to swing by ~4° the liquid beer is usually within a degree or two. I think this control costs less now then when I purchased.

I use this thermometer control for a keg freezer and it works great. Set at 40 degrees it runs down to 36 degrees then shuts the freezer off until it hits 40 again. Easy on the compressor and an easy way to turn a chest freezer into a keezer.

I have been using this thermostat with my 15 cubic foot chest type deep freeze to brew beer and to ferment wine for about 3 months. It holds the temp within about + or - 3 degrees F of the set temperature on the thermostat dial. The thermostat turns the power completely off to the freezer when the temp inside the freezer reaches about 3 degrees below the set temp. As the temp rises to about 3 degrees above the set temp it turns the power back on to the freezer. The manufacturer designed it that way so the compressor on the fridge or freezer does not have to start so frequently and cause premature failure of the compressor. I have a digital thermometer with a probe that is inside the freezer, and the digital readout on the outside of the freezer. This shows me at a glance that the thermostat is working properly. A great tool for the home brewer or winemaker. (Especially if you live in the warm climate like TEXAS.)

The thing will hold a fridge within a degree of where you want it to. It is easy to install. (despite no real directions) If you want to dink around with temp and get your goods just right, it can't do you wrong.
