Awesome Mash Tun!! Review by Len

(Posted on 5/20/11)

Product Rating:

I decided to try out all-grain brewing, but I wanted to spend my time brewing, not building my own contraption. I decided to put down the coin for this pre-built model, and I was not disappointed! The false bottom is a clever shallow dome shape, maximizing space, and not getting in the way of the stirring. I started the mash at 154 degrees, and after an hour it was still holding at 153 degrees. That was with me opening it up about half way through to check the temp. I'd say that's sufficient heat retention. My only complaint is that I wish Midwest would have published the size tubing you need to attach to the spigot. I guessed and bought the wrong size. It worked just fine without the tubing, just foamed up more than I liked while draining. All in all, I'm quite pleased.

A really good unit Review by Xenetar

As the other reviewer, decided to shell out the coin for pre-made quality, and have not been let down at all. The false bottom and pickup tube and valve assembly work quite well, and I'm able to do double batches using this, which is great. Construction is very durable, and lightweight. Holds heat consistently well, and super easy to clean. I recommend it.

works perfect, easy clean up Review by griff

If you add the components prices up, you don't save enought trying to do it yourself. I used to use two five gallon pails, with one drilled for a false bottom. This stainless false bottom works perfect. Never a stuck sparge, holds temp and gives me enough room to do ten gallon batches in the future.

Product Rating:

Brewed my first all grain batch with this and was impressed. I ordered grain with a fine grind, and the flow rate thru the 1/2" nozzle was excellent. I hit about 80% efficiency and over shot pre-boil gravity by .003. It was very easy to clean, definitely glad I decided to buy pre-built.

I did a lot of shopping around, and considered making my own ... this was worth every penny!

I shopped around for a LONG time before biting the bullet on this one. The cost and pain in the butt of making your own might save you 15-20 bucks. Not worth it to me.

I absolutely love this thing! It cleans easy. I have NEVER had a stuck sparge. I only drop 1-2 degrees over a 60 minute rest.

I fill it with oxy-clean and drain it out the spigot before I put it away. Sanitize a bit before mashing and I'm good to go.

If you price out the components, its actually better to let MidWest build this for you. Not only do they save you the time and gas to get the part, they assemble it correctly. This is a great starter mash tun.

Really good, when I finally got all the parts! Review by Mike

Product Rating:

This mash tun is everything I hoped it would be. Held my temperatures within 2 degrees on an hour long mash and worked great for a batch sparge. Problem was getting all of the parts so I could use it! First they shipped me the cooler with the faucet but no false bottom or connecting hose. Called them right away to let them know. A week later they finally sent the false bottom but no connecting hose. Five days later I got the hose and barb after having gone to the hardware store and dished out another 10 bucks to by the parts they didn't send me so I could brew some beer. You guys should take the note off your site that says comes per-assembled and just focus on sending all the parts at once.

It holds my temperatures within 2 degrees on an hour long mash.
Well constructed false bottom. So far no stuck sparges. Easy to use and clean. What more could I ask for?

After a bunch of web searching and pricing out my LHBS, I could not find a better deal on a cooler MLT than this set from Midwest. So far I've done three batches with it and I couldn't be happier. My runoffs clear fairly quickly and I've only had one issue with sparging when I tried to open the valve all the way during my first batch sparge. Since then I have only opened about half way and I have not had a stuck sparge and am getting better efficiency.

I do 5-gallon, somewhat lighter beers (usually in the 1.050 range) and I can usually keep my temp within 3 degrees during a one hour mash with ambient temps in the 40's. That's with an open and stir halfway through. I like the having the 10-gallon setup for when I start doing the bigger brews or do a 10-gallon batch.
