This recipe allows you to brew a lager at ale temperatures. This American style of beer was made popular during the gold rush. Similar to Anchor Steam. We do not recommend brewing this recipe without using a liquid yeast option (California Lager).

Our ingredients for this recipe include: 6 lb. Gold liquid malt extract, 8 oz. Carapils, 8 oz. Caramel 40L specialty grains, 1 oz. Northern Brewer hops, 1 oz. Cascade hops, yeast, priming sugar and a grain bag.

Every bit as flavorful as Anchor Steam
I lived in the Bay Area for several years and got quite accustomed to drinking Anchor Steam as my beverage of choice. I have to admit I was sceptical about this brew kit at first. I tapped my first keg on Saturday 4/27 and I can tell you it surpassed not only my expectations, but all of my friends that were there as well, And this wonderful flavor even though I did not follow the recommendation of using liquid yeast. I used Premium Dry Yeast instead and I am extremely happy with the results. I am certainly ordering this kit again. Thanks you all for putting together one of the best kits I've tried yet. I would give it 10 stars if I could.

Awesome kit
I've been a huge Anchor Steam beer fan for years and when I started brewing about a year ago, I knew I wanted to brew a clone steam beer. I was not disappointed, this beer tastes incredible. My friends that I have shared it with have also given it great reviews. I plan to start kegging my beer pretty soon, and this will be the first beer that I keg. I plan to brew this kit on a regular basis._x000D_I went with the liquid yeast, by the way.

Sam Adams Clone
Brewed this with the wyeast. Used a starter. Hit all my numbers, aged for 4 weeks in secondary at cool temps._x000D__x000D_Essentially this beer is a like a better tasting version of Sam Adams Boston Lager. If you put them side by side your average person would have a hard time to tell which is which.

Great kit worth tying again
This was one of my first kits. Brew went well Primary and secondary were near perfect at 62 degees.Bottled it and after 2 weeks tested and it had the carbonation of iced tea. Left it conditioning for 2 more weeks and it was fantastic! I gave some to a friend who hasn't tried it yet after almost 2 months, should be amazing, I used Wyeast for that batch ordered it again for the summer months using dry yeast. I will let everyone know!... important fact like all homebrews the more patience you have to let it sit the better the beer!

A good lager substitute for friends who are not into being hoppy.

California Steam Beer
One of my favorites to brew and also well liked by my friends, this beer is flavorful and refreshing with just the right mix of hops. Goes well with most foods and is also good to have simply to share a beer with friends and relax.

Great beer, ok price.
This is my favorite beer that I have made in the two years of home brewing. I highly recommend.

Have to use liquid yeast
This is fantastic. I think a lot of the crisp flavor comes from the liquid yeast. A crowd favorite, everyone enjoys it.

Nice light beer
I normally make Pale Ales and other more robust flavored brews, but wanted to get something in the bottle that wasn't as intense and the the wife could enjoy. This one is a winner. It's crisp with a mild maltiness and lightly hopped. It's full enough to know you're drinking a good homebrew, but light enough that you can down 3 or 4 in an hour without falling out of your chair.

looking for a good DME instead of sugar for California steam kit. Pilsner DME?
A shopper on Mar 7, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I suggest you prime with 31g/gal Golden Candi Syrup or Simplicity instead of sugar. I use these syrups when priming a Westvleteren 12 clone. DME (Dry Malt Extract) is used interchangeably with grains and liquid malts. I never hear of it used for priming.

liquid yeast is recommended, but you recommend not shipping liquid yeast during summer months? So now what do I do?
James C on Jun 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The Saflager S-23 Dry Yeast option should be good to go!
