4.8 / 5.08 ReviewsMulti Purpose Starter EssentialI bought this combo for the value. I use this Johnson controller and the Thermawrap to create a temp controlled bottle conditioning chest. I can hold 60, 22oz bottles in a large storage tub, that I bought and insulated at home depot, and keep the temp right at 70 degrees. This is essential for me, since I keep my brewing equipment and condition in my basement which hits 59 in the winter._x000D__x000D_The Thermowell is basically a toss in perk, and admittedly inferior to my other thermowells, but I'm sure it still does the trick._x000D__x000D_November 15, 2012Great for Cold Winter BasementsI came across this package when I was looking for a way to keep my ale fermentations warm enough during winter. This setup does just that and at a great savings over buying them separately. I actually bought it while it was on sale for less than the regular price for the Johnson controller itself, so I couldn't pass it up. I can also use the temp control if I ever get around to building a keezer!January 15, 2013Great value!Picked this up for a Christmas present to myself. You save $40 by buying the kit together, and it's just $15 extra than the controller itself, so you may as well do it. I've been using the whole kit on a carboy in my basement this winter, and it does great.January 29, 2013Keeps it Bubbling ..I got this a few weeks ago and it is in use right now .. quality is what you would expect from the controller and wrap, i was concerned about the thermowell and stopper since thats what people seem to comment on most here - they seem fine so far for me. I am using this setup in a glass 5 gallon carboy and it fits but the stopper is flush with the top of the opening but it is a good fit and the airlock is bubbling away and the temp is steady. _x000D__x000D_one thing i would suggest maybe since people are obviously buying the combo to use for heating is that the controller be shipped with that jumper set to heat instead of cool from midwest and it include some specific directions for this setup. _x000D__x000D_and this is a great deal .. i am thinking about buying another one of these setups!_x000D_March 26, 2013Great temp controllerI have not used the fermentation heater yet so cannot comment. I use the temp controller to keep my mini-frig at fermentation temps. That is working perfectly.March 17, 2016All good but the stopperAll good except for the The Stopper Thermowell since the stopper is too small that even will loose into the 3 or 5 G carboy._x000D__x000D_I will recommend Midwest Supplies to change the size of the stopper or change the manufacture of the product.January 31, 2013Winter fermentingThis saved me $20 over buying the individual components. I can also use the controller if I ever make my own fermentation chamber from an old freezer.March 4, 2014Fermentation HelpThe thermostar and heating element that goes around your carboy is extremely easy to set up and does an excellent job in keeping your fermentation at the temperature that you desire.December 7, 2016

Browse 6 questions Browse 6 questions and 7 answersWill this work well with a fast fermenter sitting in the rack?BEST ANSWER: The heating wrap is intended for cylindrical carboys. So, while you'll be able to wrap it around a Fastferment, it will not contour to the fermentor very well. Additionally, the stand will impede your ability to wrap the heater around the fermentor. So, overall, it will not be a great fit.I have a deep freeze I would like to start lagering in, is this kit all I need to solve my needs?BEST ANSWER: It is; or you can just set the freezer up with any of the temp controllers to be able to hold the temperature where you want it. With that "Fermentation Kit" you also have a heating wrap and long probe intended to be used to keep a carboy warmer than the surrounding area; or you can set up the long temp probe in the carboy in the controlled freezer to monitor the internal temp of the carboy, for more precise lagering temp monitoring. -Mike W, Midwest Supplieswhat is the temp. range of this unit?BEST ANSWER: The temperature controller can be set for -50 - 300 degrees F. The heat wrap will only be able to increase temps by about 10-15 degrees above ambient at most. So you can expect to operate a fermentor at about 70-80 degrees.Does this control both the temperature of the fridge AND the heater wrap? So does it shut off the fridge when it is too cold, and then turn on the heater wrap when the beer is too cold, and turn on the fridge when the beer is too warm and shut off the heater wrap when its too warm? Or does it just control the heater wrap, and you must just set your fridge to stay on?BEST ANSWER: Hello Matt,
Thank you for choosing Midwest Supplies! The Thermostar, controls one or the other. In most applications, you will only need one or the other based on your ambient temperature, there are very few cases where one would need to cool and heat. That would be a fairly inefficient system. Say your ambient temperature is lower than your target fermentation temperature, then you would plug the thermo star into the heat wrap to bring it up. The thermostar would apply power to the heat wrap until the probe sensed the temperature was at fermentation temp, it will then cut off power to the heat wrap. Now if you were somewhere warm, the thermostar would then be plugged into your refrigerator or freezer and the same process would go but working to cool the fermentation. The best/most efficient way to bring temp up and down would be with a glycol heat exchange system. I hope that this helps!I'm sorry I just need to check you put this unit on your bucket or carboy and put it any fridge and controls the temperature without changing the temperature of the fridge, just the carboy or bucket? Right, and does it work on buckets?BEST ANSWER: Hello Tim,
Thank you for choosing Midwest Supplies! That is correct, if you use that fermentation kit, you can put it in a fridge and warm the fermentation without directly changing the temperature of the fridge. That being said, from having a warmer liquid with the heat wrap, the fridge will more than likely heat up a bit as well. The heat wrap will definitely work on buckets as well. I hope that this helps, let me know if you have any further questions!I don't see any mention of using this with a specific stopper, since I'm a bit ignorant here I'd like to know what else I need to complete the set. ThanksBEST ANSWER: There's not a specific stopper that you need for this. If you want to suspend the temperature probe in the beer
you can run the probe through the stopper hole before inserting the airlock. Alternately
you can tape the probe to the outside of the fermenter.
