Description

Details

Irish ales are malty, smooth, medium-bodied, and most, like our kit, are a deep copper-red color that is created by a blend of specialty malts. Our malt blend also gives this recipe its signature toasty and sweet aroma and flavor.

Another defining characteristic of Irish Red Ales are their immense drinkability — definitely a crowd-pleasing beer. Its great taste, drinkability, and low aging requirements make this our best-selling kit.

Overactive yeast?
The only problem we had was when it was fermenting. After about 1 or 2 days in the jug with the aerate plug the brew started making a LOT of foam. After an hour of this, the foam started coming out of the plug and then about 30 minutes later it exploded. It was kind of a mess, but we let the extra foam flow out, cleaned up and put another plug in the jug. When it had fermented for the proper period, we enjoyed the ale. It seemed to be fine, but we were a bit perplexed at the explosion.

Used to be better
I've brewed this a few times over the years and it used to be better. It seems watered down. I used the same amount of water etc. I also brewed the Irish Stout the same day and also it seems very watered down. I'm wondering if Midwest has changed their ingredients and are giving those that make lighter beers. All-in-all disappointed. Probably going to move on to a new supplier.

Good clean beer
I often add 1lbs to 1-1/2lbs of clover honey at the end of boil. A nice ale.

Turned out great!
This was my first batch brewed in over 3 years. I used a closed loop transfer to the keg so that no oxygen got in at all and it turned out great. I'm having some now, but I gotta make it last till the end of the month so our friends can have some when we teach them how to homebrew. Not gonna be easy to do.
