As implied by the name, this malt will give a sharp roasted flavor and deep red to black color. Used in porters, stouts, and dark ales and lagers. Midwest suggests using this malt in moderation.

Briess Black Malt
I use 4 ounces in my Porters, to go along with some Chocolate malt and roast barley. It is strong and does indeed add sharp roasted flavors., so I wouldn't go above 6 ounces.
