I really got this to determine if my grapes were ready to be picked for trying to make wine etc... but I am really a brewer and once I used this for my wort I found it to be indispensable .. One drop of wort and you know your brix SG .. No more messing around with a hydrometer and having to test a whole tube full.. Why waste even more than a drop of your beer? This should be in every brewers equipment kit and why Its only way over here in wine making beats me..

Great to have, but not necessary

I got this because I got tired of dropping my hydrometers (twice in three months). This refractometer is great to measure OG of the wort before any fermentation takes place. I have found that during and after fermentation, the alcohol will throw off the readings. Yes, there is a calculation to correct for the alcohol and many websites where you plug in your readings in the refractometer to get the corrected FG. So, I will be buying a hydrometer to double check all my readings/calculations.

A must for home brewers

As an ER physician I found the Refractomer ATC the same item I used in my training for measuring the specific gravity of urine (go figure). After breaking two hydrometers I find the refractometer to be handy, durable, easy to use and allows me to get a quick measurement. This should be in every homebrewers equipment list.

This is a fantastic product. No longer do I have to wait till my wort is cooled completely to find out the gravity and now I can also know what my gravity is before I boil to see how long I have to boil. Defiantly a must have for all grain brewers.

This is easier to read than my old Brix-only refractometer - having both SG and brix is a definite plus. Once I calibrated it, it agreed with my hydrometer. Price is about even with other retailers.

Handy for All Grain brewing

I like to check my efficiency when mashing. Plus I do Brew in a Bag, and sparge in a pot of extra water, and like to see how much extra sugar I get from the Sparge.
Way easier than using a hydrometer.

If you are doing all-grain brewing, this is a must have. It make keeping good records of the brew day much more accurate. It also can be tested with only a few drops of wort instead of a few ounces like a hydrometer. Easy to use and easy to read.

Great product. I love being able to monitor OG and adjust the amount of DME that I add after a partial mash. The only caveat is that when checking FG, alcohol alters the true reading and you need to go online and get a conversion or your values will be way off. The first one Midwest sent was defective (screen was heavily scratched) but they quickly replaced it.
