Looks Like It Will Work

I just received this today, so I have not had a chance to use it yet. While cleaning the flask, I noticed there were several bubbles within the glass. From what I remember from chemistry, they did not have bubbles in them. It should work for my purposes though, I never planned on heating the flask.

I bought this kit 3 weeks ago and until then I have never used a starter. Where have I been !!! I followed the instructions and have so far have produced 2 great starters. The only thing I don't like is the instructions don't tell you that you have to account for evaporation and how much you should use. Other than that a great product!

Foam for a topper?

I purchased one of these kits about a year ago, and was pleased with the purchase. This time, the "Topper" is a piece of foam? I expected to get a rubber topper like i did with the first order. The foam is more prone to germs - essentially worthless, will throw it away.
Disappointed a rubber stopper wasn't included.
Editor's note: We like the foam stoppers just fine, they work well.

Easy way to get into starters

Decided to make my first lager, so I purchased this kit to make a starter. The directions are easy to follow, although they don't account for evaporation, so you'll probably need to top back off with boiled/cooled or bottled water. Everything came out well.
The directions also seem to indicate a rubber stopped/airlock combination, but the kit comes with a foam stopper. The stopper works perfectly fine, but this threw me for a second thinking I was missing something.

This kit has been awesome with my homemade stir plate. I honestly don't really use the foam stopper. For a 24 hour starter, it's great but when I make a 2L batch I tend to go for about 3-4 days. I like to airlock it so that the changes in pressure doesn't expel the CO2 layer and just suck air back into the flask.
Going to need some more DME, I've already used it up!
Only thing is that I don't think this is borosilicate. So as they say, no direct heat. If you went from the stove to an ice bath this thing would shatter I bet. Kind of wish it was borosilicate but for the price difference, I can take the extra step of using a pot.

I like this kit a lot. I believe the foam stopper is used in place of the rubber one and airlock to so that oxygen can get into the flask which aids in cell reproduction and health??? Anyways, I think that this is a kit that should be every new brewers next purchase just to make sure that they are pitching enough healthy yeast which is the easiest way to improve beer quality in my opinion.

This is the BEST thing I've invested in since I started brewing. Increases yeast yield by a ton! Cuts down on lag time! More active fermentations!

Worked as expected, but instructions need clarification. Always measure out your DME by weight (100 grams per Liter/0.9 pounds per gallon), not by volume (1 cup is unlikely to equal 100 grams). Only enough DME for two 2L starters, definitely get more.

Use this consistently now for getting my fermentation off on a quick start. Quality seems good, no issues with foam stopper. Flask is easy clean up and handles boiling wort transfer to ice bath fine. As mentioned in other reviews, evaporation is not accounted for (shooting for 1.040 OG), I've never measured but have had no problems thus far.
