Quality Issues

I've had two of these hydrometers and both have broken with normal use. The glass at the upper tip of the hydrometer has been exceptionally fragile and has cracked with normal finger pressure. Very unlike the quality I've enjoyed from Midwest equipment.

Yes, indeed this is fragile instrument, much like any precision tools we use, however, with gentleness this will last for years and is accurate with comparison to another hydrometer that I borrowed.

A good instrument and accurate, as long as you make use of a temperature correction scale (available online). I have my 1st one for 3 years before I broke it today, making my Xmas Ale ... dang it! Now I have to buy 2 more, just to have a spare on hand.

Cheap but accurate.
I break them all the time. Have had one even show up broken on arrival, but that was handled very well by customer service.
Probably can manage three batches before some factor or another causes it to break, usually just on the upper part like the other reviewer complained about.
I'd pay 4x as much for one that can handle a gentle drop on a countertop and not crack, but still be as accurate.

Checked with distilled water and read correctly. Easy to use and read. Very fragile but should be ok if you are not hard on it.

Too Hard to Read

I had already owned this exact model and was hoping to upgrade (after breaking my old one). I find this product inexpensive, but very difficult to read. I wish there were another model, perhaps one specific to beer or something, that was easier to actually read. Seems like a guess every time I use it.

Did not realize how fragile the stem was until it broke by just looking at it.

Received one of these hydrometers in my brew kit that I got as a gift for Christmas. Opened up the plastic tube that contained the hydrometer and noticed the top of the hydrometer was open at the top. I thought this was how this unit was made. Started my first brew and when I was putting the hydrometer away I noticed a glass piece stuck in the end of the styrofoam packaging. It was the glass top of the hydrometer. I tried to pop the glass piece back into the end of the hydrometer just to have it break on me right after measuring the specific gravity of my first brew. Now I am screwed. No hydrometer to measure my first brew.
I tried to order a new hydrometer only this time I was gonig to order 2 of them so I could have one as a back up. To my amazement shipping and handing was more than the cost of the 2 hydrometers ($13.00). That's ridiculous!!! I went to Amazon instead and purchased 2 hydrometers for $13.00 including shipping and handling. I won't be making any more small purchases from this website anymore. I'll use amazon from now on.
