DetailsUnleash an explosion of flavors with the Depth Charge™ Stainless Steel Infuser for Big Mouth Bubbler®. Easy to clean and sanitize, the stainless steel mesh delivers a blast of dry hops, fruit, oak chips, or spices directly into your beer or wine while minimizing the mess. Easily control flavorings to maximize their punch, without the risk of over-extraction.
The unique design allows the mesh basket to be removed at any time, perfect for creating a custom flavor schedule and the removal of nearly all trub material before racking. A custom punch-down tool enables regular agitation of the flavorings and helps squeeze every tasty drop from the infuser, without disturbing the rest of the batch. Less wasted beer and wine. 3.7 / 5.019 ReviewsGood solution for dry hopping with the big mouth bubblerDepth charge works as advertised. I did a 3 oz dry hop and after using the included tool to push it down into the beer after an hour or so, they stayed in solution for the 5 days of dry hopping.
The part that attaches to the lid is sturdy, but stitching on the basket needs to be handled and washed carefully as it’s a little flimsy and very sharp.
It can also be used as a hop filter in the boil and depending on your kettle size (doesn’t really work on my 15 gallon kettle unless I clip it to the top).February 17, 2019Purchased
4 months agoSo far so good.Works as advertised. I didn't have an issues with sharp edges like others have said. My only advice would be if you plan to do any smaller batches to use the 5 gallon BMB because the charge will reach lower. I use this to filter my wort as I'm transferring from the kettle to the primary, too. Does great. Also has the added benefit of aerating the wort while transferring. Nice device. I'll probably be using this setup for a long time.April 5, 2018Purchased
1 year agofitment issuesI purchased one of these with my latest order to pair with the 6.5 gallon glass evo2 Big Mouth. The lid opening on the glass Big Mouth was slightly out of round by about 1/8" and would not allow the universal lid of the Depth Charge to fit. I had to have the glass 6.5 unit replaced with a plastic 6.5 unit in order to get the batch finished off with the depth charge as planned. The batch is still going but the Depth Charge seems to be working as advertised in the plastic 6.5. Overall, it's a great product idea but I'd like to see it paired with the grey screw on type lid to avoid the fitment issues and potential lid security issues that go with the universal type lids.March 29, 2018Purchased
1 year agoGreat Product!Used once so far and it held 4oz of pellet hops really well! Also was far easier to clean than the bags I used before! My only small issue is that I can't use my thermowell with it to hold temperature while dry hopping since it has only one opening and is only large enough for a single airlock. Would be perfect if the opening fit a stopper instead.March 28, 2018Purchased
1 year agoWorks wellHaven’t tried the beer yet, but dry-hopping was a breeze. I only use the glass carboys generally which don’t work well for dry-hopping, this was easy. My only complaint with the whole system is the lack of any type of indent for handles on the Big Mouth.March 27, 2018Purchased
1 year agoUse a carboyTop pops off. Not the best design. Could have come up with a twist on/off cap not a push down cap.March 18, 2018Purchased
1 year agoWorks well but only with 6.5GalI purchased this item along with an EVO2 5 Gal Bigmouth. Huge Mistake.
I filled the carboy with EXACTLY 5 Gallons of wort (even had to toss some extra wort). Then I added 2 oz of leaf hops to dry hop for 2 weeks......
with every 10-12 hours that passed, the rubber stopper would be pushed out by the hops rising to the top.
Using my typical buckets I would never have this ussie due to having enough head space to disperse the hops. However, this item caused many issues and possible contamination of my beer multiple times a day.
The lesson is to purchase the 6.5 Gal Evo2 rather than the 5 Gal with this item.
Customer service was not very helpful in solving the issue either...
Do Not use this item for the 5Gal EVO2 it, the stopper sits too low.November 14, 2017Purchased
1 year agoResponse from Midwest SuppliesThanks for the review. The 2 ounces of leaf hops is about the capacity for the depth charge, especially with the limited headspace of the 5-gallon Big Mouth Bubbler. For a bigger hop blast in the 5-gallon BMB, we suggest sticking with hop pellets.November 17, 2017Todd J StaffOuch! Doesn't fit wellIt has a very tight fit to the cap to screen. Also has small sharp wires on the seam of the screen. So when I put it together and disassemble for cleaning it cuts and pokes, and it is hard to assemble. But works good in secondary if I get past the bleeding fingers.November 13, 2017Purchased
1 year agoGreat dry hop addition toolThis product is great! Helps reduce loss with aggressive dry hopping in secondary.November 12, 2017Purchased
over 2 years agoGreat idea but has problemI have a first generation 6.5 gallon big mouth bubbler. The depth charge assembly will not stay in the mouth of the bubbler. It keeps wanting to pop out. I have resorted to using packing tape to hold it in. This is an unnecessary pain. Perhaps it works better with second generation big mouth bubblers, but it doesn’t work well with first generation glass models.October 3, 2017Purchased
1 year agoResponse from Midwest SuppliesThere are a few tricks that can help get you bubbling away happily.
First, I would sanitize the lid and let it air dry a bit before inserting. Press one side of the lid in first, then the opposing side. Lift up the lid in places until you see and feel the ribs on the lid gasket "lock" into place. It should feel noticeably tight once you do so.
If a tight fit is not attainable with the normal insertion technique above, you're still in luck. Remove the lid, take the gasket off, and reinstall the gasket upside down. The ribs on the gasket will engage in a much tighter manner. You'll still want to install it according to the above instructions, but I think you'll find that it grabs much more.October 7, 2017William R Staff

300 Micron meshWould this be able to survive a boil? Possibly as a hop-spider substitute?BEST ANSWER: You would have to modify the mesh cylinder to use it as a hop-spider. I have a hop spider I made out of a 3in to 4in PVC, a mesh bag, a large hose clamp and some carriage bolts that works quite nicely and is much less expensive than risking ruining a nice tool for dry hopping.I got one of these in May of last year; will it work with the Depth Charge or is the EVO 1/2-thing an issue? Thank you.Big Mouth Bubbler® Depth Charge™BEST ANSWER: The depth charger will work with either the plastic or glass BMB as long as you have the lid that came with the depth charger as it's different than the standard lid on the bmb. Will the depth charger keep pellet hops from getting into my beer during dry hop? Or is the screen too porous for pellet hops? Thank youBEST ANSWER: I recently purchased the Depth Charge and have used it twice. I brew 10G batches and split my fermentation between two fermenters. I did an IPA that dry-hops with about 5 oz of hops in each 5G ferementer. I staggered my dry hopping so the first was kegged before I dry hopped the second.
The hops were so packed that I could not use the flat end of the ramrod to push them around. I am happy to report that the Depth Charge kept hop particles out of my beer. It does have a bit of a haze, as you would expect from a NE style IPA, but otherwise clear. Will the depth charge accessory work with the screw on lid?Big Mouth Bubbler® Depth Charge™BEST ANSWER: Hi there- it does not work with the screw on lid.
