Calibrated to 0.05% lab thermometer and it is only 1 degree F low, not bad for the price. Also fits in the 1/4 inch thermowell on my fermenter too....
Since I got my Grainfather I only use this for my sparge water and checking the temp of my water when rehydrating yeast. There is nothing like an instant read to keep you on track. The diameter and length are perfect, and the plastic cap allows you to attach a string if you need to. They don't break very often, only when you drop it (duh).
After about 40 batches, I started to get really bad attenuation in my fermentations. I checked my thermometer and it was reading boiling water at 206F at sea level! I had been mashing at 158-160F! Be sure to always calibrate before using!
