Briess Caramel Malt 40L

SKU: U16629

Briess Caramel Malt 40L for use in many beer styles to enhance body, color, and flavor of your beer.

* Required Fields

Briess caramel malts are produced in a roaster rather than a kiln. This allows for the application of higher temperatures to the green malt, resulting in the development of unique flavors, colors, and aromas. Caramel 40L is a popular and verstaile medium caramel malt that will contribute rich golden hues and smooth flavors of sweet toffee and caramel. Use 3-15% in many beer styles to enhance the body, foam stability, color, and flavor of your beer. 40°L

My go to Caramel Malt
My standard pale ale malt. Works great for steeping. Adds a nice color and flavor.

Whole grain
I order my grains whole. When I roll them with a rolling pin you can smell the freshness. You could also use a 12 oz. glass long neck bottle to roll them.

A nice, lighter caramel
Adds body and and helps a bit with head retention, like all caramels. This one contributes lighter caramel notes; not much different from the 60L (my go-to), except for a decrease in flavor. This is definitely not a bad grain, but unless you're seriously concerned about color, it would be more efficient to just go with the 60L, and use less if you want a later flavor

I like for Reds.
This is a good malt. Gives a nice light red color profile to your beer and has a somewhat sweet caramel flavor. This is a good malt for any beer lighter than a porter, IMO.

will this grain add extra fermentable sugars for higher alcohol content to the beer?
A shopper on Dec 8, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It will add some, but mostly it will add more body fullness (i.e. it will feel more robust in the mouth - less like water), as well as flavor and some color. If alcohol is what you're looking for, use more of a base malt like American 2-row, or just add a fermentable sugar (table sugar, maple syrup, honey, etc.)
