Rice Hulls are used to give your mash an effective filter bed.
While they may be used in any all-grain batch for this purpose, they should definitely be used when mashing large amounts of flaked adjuncts or wheat malt.

Good clean product thank you
I found using rice hulls assist with preventing stuck mashes in the Blichman Brew Easy KRIMS. Essential when using flaked oats in a recipe.
After experiencing an expensive stuck mash, I started adding rice hulls, and that improved the flow immensely.
I use rice hulls in most of my mashes as a precaution. For some of the trickier grains like Rye I use an additional amount.
