Its only oxygen or air passing through the stone. Usually i try to soak it in fresh sanitizer solution for 20 min and flush it with air/ oxygen before using. Always clean it after use to prevent possibly clogging it.Is the diffusion stone removable/replaceable?BEST ANSWER: Great question! The answer however is no, the and and stone are connected. I tried a number of progressively more powerful aquarium pumps without success. In the end I used a compressor and dialed the output pressure way back. Trial and error in a bucket of water, somewhere around 10psi works for me. Had to buy accessories for the compressor (harbor freight, less than $10) and used some ingenuity to make the connections. Good luck.
