DetailsA yeast starter will reduce the time it takes a fermentation to begin by dramatically increasing cell count. A starter also allows you to assess the quality and viability of the yeast before pitching. The increased cell count and pitching rate will have many positive effects on fermentation including better attenuation and cleaner taste. Highly recommended for high gravity worts (O.G.>1.060) and lagers. Also the best way to ensure liquid yeast health during warm weather shipping. Kit contains 1000mL flask, foam stopper, 1 lb DME, a 6x9 recloseable bag (to preserve remaining for future yeast starters) and instructions.
Do not apply direct heat to the flask.

4.6 / 5.020 ReviewsGood Starter KitI bought this when I first started brewing a year ago. The flask has held up great. Wish I would have gone right for the 2L for bigger starters, but this works great for stepping up now.October 29, 2012nice helpFor big beers or saving yeast, you need a yeast starter. I built my own stir plate for about $5 from instructions I found online. This is very easy. Instead of the sponge I just use an airlock on top. A little pricey for a beaker and DME.December 11, 2012Great kit, but I would go with the 2L next timeI started with this kit, but have since upgraded to the 2L size. This is a great price for the flask alone, much less the kit. I make a starter for all of my brews now and have not had any issues with any of the equipment. However, I do use aluminum foil rather than the stopper provided.December 12, 2012A Must!I believe this is an absolute must purchase item for anyone who homebrews. Combine this with a magnetic stir plate and you have yourself a winning combo. No longer will you have to worry about under-pitching, or your yeast not being healthy enough when it comes time to make that beer. It feels good to know that my "yeasties" are at their best before they go to work. I boil in a pan and transfer to the flask. A 1 liter flask is, in my opinion, just too small to boil in without having a boil over. If you want to boil directly in the flask (which you can do with this special glassware) without the risk of boil overs, I would recommend going with the 2L or greater volume flasks.January 25, 2013Works great for small batchesThe product itself is amazing, but the directions with it are not very accurate. Also, I do not recommend using this for any batch larger than 5 gallons as you cannot fit quite enough wort into it. If you are going larger than 5, I suggest the 2L.February 21, 2013Nice simple kitAll you need to make a basic starter. Clear instructions and quality through out. I have just made 2 batches using this and really cant say if the results are any better but lag time seemed less and final gravity was spot on for the recipes I used.April 20, 2013PerfectFor the longest time I would just pitch my white labs yeast without a starter. Until my last batch which failed to ferment. My luck had finally caught up with me and I decided to order this starter kit to make sure that never happened again._x000D__x000D_Great basic kit got my starter going great which had a quick and solid fermentation.July 20, 2013Always great products and greatAlways great products and great customer serviceDecember 21, 2015Kinda smallThis flask easily fits in the fridg. I use it to decant my yeast.March 31, 2017Purchased
1 year agoNo problemsI've used mine without problems. Greg's right about the DME clumping and sticking in the neck of the flask, but this is an easy to work around problem.September 19, 2010
