DetailsBorn on the West Coast, perfected on the North Coast. Our Black IPA draws inspiration from the northernmost reaches of the great Midwest. Like people who endure the long cold winters of northern Minnesota, this dark and hoppy brew is more robust than its western cousin but is right at home in any region that cultivates a pioneering spirit.
Gunflint is as dark as a night deep in the north woods, with hops as bright as the Milky Way over the tree tops. It will lead you down a path of rich caramel and toffee maltiness highlighted with a light roasted bitterness and a hint of cacao. The earthy and piney hops loaded throughout this intense beer envelop you with the essence of the wilderness and will put you in the right frame of mind to blaze a new trail into the unknown.

4.4 / 5.07 ReviewsGreat Beer! This was one of the highest alcohol kits I've brewed so far. It fermented out within 12 days and then I left it sit for another 2 weeks deciding on when to bottle. I bottled 2 pints right before dry hopping the for the last week of secondary. When I went to bottle the rest of the batch I opened one bottle just to see how it was turning out. I poured out the pint having only been bottled a week and it was great! It had plenty of carbonation and a lasting creamy head. I can't wait to let this batch age a month or more and then enjoy it. My alcohol was 6.8 percent.August 11, 2015This beer is a behemoth!!Color was not quite as black as expected, tones of burgundy almost. Good cream head. Dark citrus aroma with hints of melon smacks you instantly. Flavor is heavy simcoe in the beginning with a clean caramel malt middle that is being chased by a giant hop finish! Great big ipa, Love it!March 25, 2014Wow, so much better than expected!I love dark ales and I love IPA. This is the perfect marriage of all the favors I like in a beer. I will be ordering this one again for sure. You can't go wrong.July 9, 2014excellentI kegged it and took a growler dirt bike riding for the after ride toast it was a hit ! It was still very young at that point. I think this one of my favorite brews.??December 17, 2016Purchased
1 year agoExcellent Beer! This is an excellent Black IPA recipe._x000D_It is a little on the expensive side, but it's one of my favorite beers I have made to date (close to 20 yrs of brewing experience)._x000D_This beer has great balance between the hops and malts, bursting with flavors.December 2, 2014Fantastic recipeThis recipe is amazing. I dry hop in the keg in the muslin bags Midwest provides with their kits, this makes for a very hop forward beer with all of the dark malt goodness of a stout or porter. This is a bold beer aptly named Gunflint. It may be named after a local place name for the Midwest guys but this beer brings the firepower. You'll love the aroma of brew day with this one and you'll love drinking it even more.July 29, 2015Sweeter than an IPA, more bitter than a stoutGreat beer! I found that waiting 1-2 months after bottling brought out the best in the overall flavor profile/interaction between the malts and hops in this beer. Compare to Founder's Dark Penance.September 26, 2015
