4.6 / 5.015 ReviewsWorks, but I have some concernsThe FF setup was easy to assemble and gets the job done. My concerns are these: The handles are made of cheap plastic and are fastened to the coolers with 4 small screws, which nearly pulled out during my first use of this equipment. The handles themselves are poorly designed, and during lifting, they smash fingers against the wall of the cooler when filled. Probably more important though is that the cooler lids are not air tight, and my mash lost about 4 degrees F over the course of an hour. I even heated the mash tun with boiling water before adding strike water and dough-in. Perhaps the larger airspace in a 16 lb grain bill requires a higher strike water temp. Even so, the lids should be airtight to keep the heat inside the coolers.June 16, 2016Good system, weak handlesI'm happy with this system. easy to use, high quaility false bottom and valves. But one word of warning: don't even think about lifting the coolers with the handles unless they are mostly empty. Very weak and held on with a few screws in plastic.September 7, 2015Worth BuyingI just got done using this 10 gallon kit and will say that after an hour of the mash the strike water only lost 2 degrees. The price is very reasonable and it is very easy to assemble._x000D_I will say that it came with pipe tape and the instructions did not say were to use the tape, after some research I used the tape on the outside of the coolers for the fittings. _x000D_This was well worth the investment.June 19, 2014Solid kit.Easy to assemble, easy to clean. Holds temperature respectably. I had a little bit of a learning curve. I need to preheat the mash tun or heat my strike water an extra few degrees to account for initial heat loss. Wimpy handles are why it's not getting 5 stars.February 2, 2017Purchased
3 months agoExcellent equipmentExcellent equipmentDecember 25, 2015Great, flexible system for common brew sizes!I was originally going to get the smaller system, but figured for a few dollars more, why not upgrade and have the flexibility for the future?_x000D__x000D_This is a great system - easy to assemble and does the job very well. I'm pleased with the overall quality of the coolers and the valves. This system ended up being a better deal than what my local brew shop had - and that's taking shipping into account.April 6, 2015This is a great kit! This is a great kit! Great value and a great buy! This is perfect for the holidays!Added Nov 22, 2016November 22, 2016Nearly perfect product in termsNearly perfect product in terms of price for quality, only thing I wish had been added was an arm bar for the sparge arm, otherwise I absolutely love it.August 2, 2016Would recomended for advanced brewing.Pretty neat. Was a little disappointed after learning about brew in a bag. Then read some articles about hardest beers to brew. Among them Belgian witbier. My fav. So now I feel good about the purchase. No leaks easy to assemble. Holds temperature well.January 14, 2017Purchased

This is a very nice product. Keeps very consistent temperatures even in freezing cold weather. Is this durable?BEST ANSWER: So far so good. I've had about 6 months and brewed about 8-10s with it. The handles should really only be used when empty or nearly empty. Soon after buying this kit I installed a Blichmann Autosparge in it to allow me to keep the lid on and retain heat and added a heating element to the HLT to raise and maintain sparge temp easily.will this work for 5 gal batch?BEST ANSWER: This is perfect for 5 gallon batches. I've made several 5 gallon batches using this equipment with great results. The coolers retain heat well during the mash and are big enough to hold volumes for fly and batch sparging.I'm having a terrible stuck mash problem. What am I doing wrong? I am using the sparge arm off my old kit. Everything else is stock from the kit. What gives?BEST ANSWER: Hello Denise,
Thank you for choosing Northern Brewer! There are a few things that can cause an issue here. First off, what is the grain bill that you are using when you get a stack mash/sparge? Do you mill your own grains, or do you order them crushed? What temperature do you typically mash, sparge at? Do you clear your ball valve out after each brew? Also, does the false bottom sit flush on the bottom of your cooler? Sorry for all of the questions, just trying to get a grasp of what may be going on here! Let me know, and we will get it figured out!Can you please inform the dimension of the cooler?
Qlso inform the total size of the package.BEST ANSWER: Shipping box dimensions: 16" x 16" x 22". Cooler inside diameter 13 5/8", outside diameter 15 1/2", total height with lid on 21". Great system so far.Can a pump be used to transfer from MLT to BK?BEST ANSWER: I don't see why not. I just use gravity. Is a sparge arm included?BEST ANSWER: It doesn't include a sparge-arm, but it does include tubing and a "fighter jet" sparge sprayer. Super easy to use, works well. You may want a sparge arm for more precise control down the road, but what's included works just fine. Are the bronze ball valves lead free?BEST ANSWER: These ball valves are lead-free.
